Lena's society believes love is a disease, amor deliria nervosa, that need to be cured. Love has been banned in the U.S. for forty-six years when the book begins. Girls and boys are forbidden to socialize with one another before they've been 'cured' of love by a procedure the government performs when individuals turn eighteen.
