Defiance is written in simple English. The intended audience of this novel is young adults, therefore much of the novel, including dialogue and narration, is geared toward that age group. As the novel is set in a future that developed after an event like an apocalypse, some terms used might be unfamiliar to the reader. However, the author carefully explains these words within the narration.

The language of this novel is simple and easy to understand. The author does not use a great deal of sophisticated language, nor does she use made up words or terms that might not be recognized by the intended audience. The author is true to her characters and her audience by using language that could understandably be used by characters in this situation and is easily understood by young adults.
