Police work is the major theme of the story. Guido Brunetti has spent many years as a police officer in Venice. Through hard work, Brunetti has reached the rank of commissario, which is equal to a superintendent in other countries. Brunetti does not abuse his power, although he is not afraid to use it to get results, whether or not the action is appreciated, which it is rarely. Brunetti's biggest obstacle in the Questura is his immediate supervisor, Vice-Questore Patta, an arrogant man who cares about nothing more than promoting his own image and making the Questura look good to higher level officials. This behavior angers Brunetti who has respect for justice and doesn't care at all about politics. In fact, Brunetti hates politics.
