There is an intimate confessional tone to this book. As the story is told mainly through the dialogue of the characters as events unfold and the novel progresses, the reader is able to develop a true feeling for those involved in the storyline. Written in present tense, the reader feels as if they are watching the events unfold before them, and gets a sense of the feelings the characters experience.
