SJ’s green nail polish symbolizes devotion and support. Once, when she and Justyce were still close friends and subtly flirting, she asked him what his favorite color was and bought a green nail polish to match it. When he sees her wearing green nail polish at Manny’s funeral, he understands the message she sends: no matter the misunderstandings between them, her affection continues and she wants to support Justyce however she can. When she and Justyce reunite after his visit to Martel’s house, SJ touches his arm and it reminds him of the negative symbol in his wrists. However, he sees her nail polish and remembers the positive symbol instead: “he feels a weight slip off his shoulders. They’re chipped now, but her nails are still painted his favorite color” (168). SJ remains certain and supportive. When Justyce sees her nail polish he pushes aside the symbols that separate them and chooses to accept her support and her love.
