Richard is the point-of-view character; it is from his perspective that events are observed. Fourteen years old but even so the friend and sometimes playmate of sevenyear-old James, Richard lives in the castle of Duke William because his father, another nobleman, sent him there as a goodwill gesture—a common occurrence in medieval times.
