The social situation of world Jewry forms another dominant theme with the inclusion of the person of Jakob Daw. Jakob Daw, an Austrian writer, is very close to Channah. When he visits the family in New York, he tells Davita beautiful, strange stories, and he continues to write about these stories in his frequent letters to her after he leaves New York.
