The point of view of the novel is first person. The novel is completely narrated by Dexter Morgan. Dexter tells the story as he sees it, including two murders he commits during the course of the novel. This point of view is a dangerous choice, as novel is about a serial killer. The author, however, has chosen to use the serial killer as the narrator, using first person to allow the reader the most intimate relationship with this main character. This is a dangerous choice because an emotional attachment to the main character is essential for a novel to work. Attaching the reader so intimately to a serial killer is difficult, since a serial killer is rarely a sympathetic character. However, the writer makes this point of view work in this case because this serial killer is unique.
