There are three main settings for all of these stories, the ancient past, the imaginary present, and various dream worlds. The stories dealing with the ancient past are very far in the past, before recorded human history. The stories that take place in the imaginary present day take place at the same time that Lovecraft was writing, in the early twentieth century. The stories that take place wholly within the dream world are really only the "White Ship" and "Polaris". "Celephais" takes place largely in the world of dreams, though the main character actually lives in modern day London.
