Who is Dr. Kelpana Hemlatha / Hema from Cutting for Stone and what is their importance?

Dr. Kelpana Hemlatha / Hema is a highly skilled obstetric surgeon at Missing Hospital. On the day the twins are born, Hema is on her way back to Africa from India, her homeland. Hema arrives at the surgery in enough time to save the twins but not their mother. As a result of Sister Mary's death and Stone's absence, Hema has no choice but to raise the twins as if they're her own. Hema loves her new role as mother, and she does a great job raising them. The boys consider Hema to be their true mother.
