The land is dry and brittle. The children play outside but must run from one source of shade to another. When they walk through the grass, it breaks under their feet because it is so dry. Kumalo believes that Ndotsheni can be saved if children are taught to take better care of the land. He believes if people don't leave for the cities and the mines, they can invest in their village instead.
