The author uses language to draw a distinction between two different classes of people. The “Reds” are the people with red blood in their veins. They are considered inferior to the “Silvers” whose blood is silver in color. The different families of Silvers have different abilities. Tibe’s family is referred to as “burners” because of their ability to set things on fire. Coriane’s are “singers” while Robert comes from a family of “silks” known for their agility and grace.
