Curly, also known as Crazy Horse, is one of the two main characters of the book. During his childhood, people called him Curly because of his unusually curly hair and light complexion, a rarity amongst the people he was born into. Curly was a healthy, normal boy, the son of a local medicine man. When Curly had a vision, he learned that he was destined to be a hunter and a warrior—common vocations for males of the tribe, and he was very successful at both.
