William Shakespeare is perhaps the most famous member of the English literary canon. A poet and playwright during Elizabeth I's reign, Shakespeare is credited with the invention of a number of words in the English language. Woolf alludes to Shakespeare's Macbeth when she discusses the word associations that the human mind cannot help making. In her essay "A Room of One's Own," Woolf speculates as to what kind of literature would have been produced if a woman had possessed Shakespeare's talent and creativity.
