In Chapter One, Sam, Calliope and Coyote are introduced. The narrator reveals that Sam plays many roles which introduces the theme of characters acting as shape shifters. A reference is made to Sam's past twenty years ago. Sam is immediately attracted to Calliope, and the young Indian's interference foreshadows the importance of both him and Calliope in Sam's future.
