Wally Lamb is the author and organizer of this book. After agreeing to give a short talk at York Correctional Institution in Connecticut about the healing power of writing, he finds that the one-time talk turns into several years of writing workshops with women in the prison, which resulted in this compilation of short stories.

Wally Lamb is a family man, teacher, and fiction writer. He became a famous for his novel She's Come Undone and also for I Know This Much is True. Lamb enjoys working with the "tough cookies" in the school where he teaches. Getting to know the women at the correctional center transformed Wally Lamb's life.
