Brenda Medina served a twenty-five year sentence without parole for murder. She is the author of Hell, and How I Got There. Although she was present at the gang-related killing, she consistently maintained that she did not commit the crime. Brenda admits to participating in violence, but she is innocent of felony murder.

Brenda obtained her GED in prison. She also earned thirty-six credits toward an associate's degree. She volunteered as a bilingual tutor with Literacy Volunteers of America, and she also served as a reporter, photographer, and editor for the York Voice, an inmate newsletter.
