Guns symbolize power and violence in Correspondents. When B.D. buys his handgun legally, he feels a sudden surge of power. The shooting at the Lebanese festival is motivated, at least in part, by this feeling. Earlier in the novel, Nabil acquires a gun to protect himself in Iraq, although he never uses it.
