Names are symbols of what the parents feel to be important. There are several examples in this novel. Seven is a symbol of perfection, which is why Maverick chooses this name for his son. Seven's original name was King, which is also the name of Maverick's best friend. Both were named in honor of the King Lords, a gang that is important in Maverick's neighborhood. Maverick's name was chosen as a symbol of his ability to be a free thinker. As Maverick and Lisa consider names for their unborn daughter, Faye says they should choose a name that is hers alone. Maverick looks up to the brilliant stars for inspiration.
