The sun, as referenced in the ninth line of the poem, symbolizes the revelation the speaker experiences over the course of the poem. Often times the sun and sunlight is associated with enlightenment or the uncovering of some truth as it both literally and figuratively sheds light on things. Here, the image of the city “beautifully [steeped]” in the light of the sun represents an epiphany for the speaker (9). They feel as though they are seeing the urban landscape for the first time as everything becomes illuminated in the morning light. As a result, they acquire a newfound appreciation for the city itself.
