In the book, Complete Works: Essays, Travel Journal, Letters, de Montaigne notes the symbolic meanings behind the various robes worn by men of distinction.... robes that reflect the wearer's responsibilities. de Montaigne believes these robes should be cast aside when the wearer can no longer fulfill their responsibilites, particularly, when they have become a burden.
