Lipstick represents confidence in the novel. When Nancy is terrified to jump out of the plane, she says, “I am frantic to find that slender tube of courage. Victory Red. The color of war and confidence and freedom” (25). Wearing lipstick makes Nancy feel unstoppable. Throughout the novel, she applies it during moments of uncertainty to give her that extra boost of confidence she needs to carry out her tasks.
