Elaine represents the dangers of resentment. Unlike Willa, who took her mother’s abuse and became more like her father, Elaine is incredibly bitter all the way into her adult years. She feels obligated to hate her mother, even after her mother passes away, and has no interest in reconnecting with anyone in her family. Elaine’s bitterness ruins her relationship with Willa as Elaine wants to cut ties with anyone that reminds her of her parents. She shows how resentment can alienate people if not dealt with.
