Denise represents the life of a single parent and how difficult it can be to balance work and motherhood. She is much different than Willa, who has been married her entire adult life and stayed home to provide for her children until they were old enough to move out on their own. After losing Sean and not knowing who Cheryl’s father is, Denise has to provide for herself and for Cheryl. This is why she is more disorganized than both Willa and Cheryl, as she does not know how to balance all of the responsibility and relies heavily on others to help her. Ironically, Denise also represents independence, as she does not want to rely on others as much as Willa does.
