One major theme in the novel is that of racial prejudice. This theme is illustrated throughout the novel is Jake's interactions and experiences throughout Europe and in America. The novel not only explores the racism of whites toward blacks, but the racism found within the black community as well, specifically, the evident prejudice between light-skinned blacks (yallers) and those with dark skin, or a pure racial line.
