The scout camp attended by Tullio, Berengo, and Daria during their youth is symbolic of the extent to which Fascist politics continue to play a role in Italian culture and continue to impact the psychological wellbeing of Italians. The authoritarian organizational structure at the camp, whereby those lower down the hierarchy are subjected to physical punishment and humiliation to ensure their loyalty to those higher up, has its roots in Fascist ideology, and goes on to influence Tullio in his mistreatment of Daria.
