The tone of "Civilization" is almost exclusively positive. Ferguson's general tone is upbeat and optimistic. For the most part the book is meant to be not merely an explanation of why Western civilization dominates the others, but a kind of sermon meant to help revive the confidence that citizens of Western nations once had in their civilization.
