Who are the Forsaken in City of Bones by Cassandra Clare?

The Forsaken were once normal human beings, but after receiving multiple marks from the shadowhunters, these humans become Forsaken. The Forsaken are at the mercy of their masters, are not able to rest, have gone completely insane, and have become strng beyond measure.
