One of the main conflicts revolves around the idea of familial allegiance. Luisa Santiago is related to the Vicarios but is close friends with Plácida Linero and the godmother of Santiago Nasar. When Luisa discovers that Pablo and Pedro are intending to murder Santiago, she leaves to warn Plácida. When her husband tries to remind her of their blood relation to Pura Vicario, Luisa tells him that you always have to take the side of the dead. Her anger with Pablo and Pedro is evident when she refers to them “lowlifes” and “shitty animals”.
