The language of Christy falls into at least two distinct categories, that of the educated portion of the characters, and that of the mountain people. Christy, for only having had a year and a half of college, uses language that is peppered with highbrow words such as supurrorating, balmoral, and sonorous. When David Grantland is preaching, he uses even more highbrow words such as polemic, exegesis, syntax, and anthropomorphism. This type of language then is contrasted with that of the highlanders, whose language is based on the heritage of their Scotch-Irish ancestry and the works of Shakespeare.
