Why is Christopher Marlowe important?

Many have argued, and rightly so, that if there had not been a Christopher Marlowe, that there would not have been a Shakespeare. A predesessor of Shakepeare's Marlowe began to standardize the form, the archetypes, and to introduce elements that Shakespeare would later build upon.
