Who is Giulia Venere from Christ Stopped at Eboli and what is their importance?

Giulia Venere is reputed to be a witch, as well as a prostitute. When she moves in with Carlo as his housekeeper, she takes her work seriously, but is rather put off by the fact Carlo doesn't seem to be overly interested in her sexually. She does, however, share the art of witchcraft and making spells with him.
