Avrana Kern is the first main character who turns into an antagonist for the human characters, and a benevolent god for the spider characters. Kern is a human from the old empire who has survived in a satellite for thousands of years. As a result, she has lost her sanity and struggles to separate her own thoughts from those of the artificial intelligence named Eliza. Even before her long imprisonment, Kern had a god complex that only increased when she realized that her exaltation experiment on the green planet, which she vainly called Kern’s World, was a relative success. After the spiders developed the ability to communicate with her - despite not truly knowing what she is saying for many generations - Kern tried to sway them away from helping the humans. However, when the spiders learned how to use the nanovirus to turn the humans into allies, Kern accepts that she is not their ruler and simply advises them on what they should do, while giving them the space needed to build on their own ideas.
