Who did Calder used to spend his time with, and what does he do now?

Calder usually spent much of his time with his friend Tommy, but Tommy had moved away that summer. Now that Tommy is gone, Calder spends his free-time creating geometric shapes and words with his pentominoes and working in the local bookstore, Powell's.
