McDermott imparts the majority of the story through exposition, each scene told rather than shown. There is little dialogue throughout the novel, and it is structured like a literary novel rather than the typical best selling novel. However, the scenes that take place in the present time, like the day of the funeral, are told with more dialogue and longer scenes.
