Do the animals themselves hear animal languages as English, like how the characters in Beauty and the Beast hear French as English? Or is if just Fern who hears them as English, like how Harry Potter hears Parseltongue as English but the snakes don't?

I think we can take this story literally because it is children's fiction. We can suspend our disbelief because the story is meant to be imaginative.
