Divorce symbolizes a reclamation of female autonomy. Whenever a female character in the novel secures a divorce from her husband, the novel presents the event as a victory against patriarchy. Unfortunately, in London’s case, she feels a lingering sense of shame and failure after her divorce, as her culture looks down upon such exercises of female autonomy.
