In Cathedral, what is the narrator's problem with connecting? Is he connected with his wife?

The narrator doesn't connect with anyone because he doesn't believe in anything...and we can tell from the way he views people, that he doesn't believe in anyone, either. He is disconnected with his wife in many ways. He does not understand, nor does he have any empathy toward the things that she likes or dislikes, her friends, her past, he literally has been married to her for many years and still doesn't really know her. We are led to believe that he doesn't care to know any more than he does.
