In the section titled, Feathers and Chef’s House, Jack fondly remembers visiting Bud and Olla's house with his wife and wishes he could remember that night forever. This wish is a turning point in the story, for as it turns out, Jack remembers that night for different reasons: it symbolized the contentment he and Fran shared before they had their first child.
