Meaning of Jump Seat

The jump seat is located on the back of the cockpit door. When the door is closed, it can be folded down to accommodate an extra person in the cockpit. Off-duty pilots traveling to a distant airport for flight duty sometimes use these jump seats; this practice is known as deadheading.
