The recurring idea of love is seen in several different places in the book. The main character in the story, Jim Qwilleran, isn't necessarily looking for love but it is clear that he is open to the aspect of finding someone to date. Jim is quick to look at Rosemary as a possibility of someone to spend time with. It is the other characters in the book that will display a desire for love as a motive for their actions. Joy seems to have had a desire to love her husband but their marriage was falling apart. Because there wasn't any love in their relationship she was ready to divorce Dan.
