Velisarios is described as an exceedingly large, strong man. He lives on the island of Cephallonia, where he occasionally entertains the villagers by lifting heavy things and firing a large cannon while holding it under one arm. When an earthquake devatates the island, Velisarios takes charge and becomes a leader during the reconstruction.
