The labor strike at the Marikana platinum mine resulted in the deaths of 34 striking mine workers when police intervened and fired on the demonstrators. The mineworkers were striking for higher wages, based on the shared perception of the mine owners', the London based firm, Lonmin, Inc., excessive profits, as well as the enormous salary paid to the manager of the mine.
