Mafatu’s name means “Stout Heart.” However, due to his strong fear of the ocean, he is known by his tribe as “The Boy Who Was Afraid.” People often mock him for his fear and leave him behind on fishing trips. In order to overcome this fear and earn respect, Mafatu ventures out onto the sea. He survives alone on a distant island, gaining courage with each additional task that he is able to accomplish.
