Longing is a recurring idea in the book.During times of war, something is taken away from everything, be it a family member, possessions, or a sense of security. Although the teenagers in this novel have dedicated their lives to the Australian cause, they are not immune to feelings of longing, and these longings taint their opinions and actions during the war. The most present longing for all the children is a longing for home.
