Verrall is the son of a minor peer and hence is titled. Born in1900, he is twenty-five, lank, with a straight bearing. He takes pains to appear a proper cavalry officer, though during the novel he is the lieutenant of a native military police contingent. His face is somewhat like a rabbit's, with pale blue eyes and a triangle of teeth visible between the lips. But his expression is hard, fearless, and brutal.
