Father of Warren, Howard grew up in a family that ran grocery stores in Omaha. Howard had no desire to go into the family business. He attended college at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and was editor of the college newspaper. He met and married Leila Stahl, daughter of the West Point, Nebraska weekly paper editor. She met Howard at college, and they married and returned to Omaha, where Howard began work for an insurance agency. He later took a job as a securities salesman with the Union Street Bank, but the Depression brought bank failure and loss of job.
