Empathy is at the heart of this novel. Empathy is an advanced human trait. It gives one the ability to sense pain in others and share in their pain. Brewster Rawlins has the ability to not only recognize suffering in others but also physically take on their suffering. People eventually become addicted to Brewster’s powers.
