In the novel, Brown Girl Dreaming, Jackie must deal with her parents' divorce, a move to the South (a place she loves), and the racism and segregation she experiences there. Unfortuntely, the family moves more than once and ends up in New York, where different problems arise.... namely, her brother getting into trouble and going to prison.
