Father Bernard is the Abbott of St. Bartholomew's Abbey and the one of three people aware of Odd's special gift. Father Bernard is a straightforward man with strong convictions. He supports the work done by Brother John Heineman, embracing the idea that science can prove the existence of God. Realizing the enormity of his error, and humbled by how blindly he followed John's pursuit, he resigns in shame and humiliation, even though his feelings about himself are not shared by the other Brothers and Sisters. He still felt unworthy and spiritually unable to lead the others.
